Education

All of the institutions we have visited so far have mentioned education in some way. Today at the Apartheid museum we found out some startling statistics. Fifty percent of the visitors to the museum are school children, because it is part of their school curriculum. Forty percent of visitors are International. Do the math, that leaves only  ten percent in the local category. Noelene, who is the chief operating officer, says that this is their biggest challenge. So they work very hard every day to find ways to bring local patrons. The museum tells theApartheid story in a way that is both inclusive and personal. It is extremely disconcerting to be given a ticket that classifies you into a group by race, and be told what door you may enter. This slight discomfort is only the beginning of theApartheid story. It was a movingexperience that required some quiet reflection afterwords. “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.”. Nelson Mandela

Speaking of education. The Artist Proof Studio also has an education mission.  They see”The educational challenge as shifting the spark of passion into possibility……….so that students are able to shape a better future for themselves.”
